In this third installment in the #1 bestselling Stalking Jack the Ripper series, a luxurious ocean liner becomes a floating prison of scandal, madness, and horror when passengers are murdered one by one…with nowhere to run from the killer. .

Audrey Rose Wadsworth and her partner-in-crime-investigation, Thomas Cresswell, are en route to New York to help solve another blood-soaked mystery. Embarking on a week-long voyage across the Atlantic on the opulent RMS Etruria, they’re delighted to discover a traveling troupe of circus performers, fortune tellers, and a certain charismatic young escape artist entertaining the first-class passengers nightly.

But then, privileged young women begin to go missing without explanation, and a series of brutal slayings shocks the entire ship. The strange and disturbing influence of the Moonlight Carnival pervades the decks as the murders grow ever more freakish, with nowhere to escape except the unforgiving sea. It’s up to Audrey Rose and Thomas to piece together the gruesome investigation as even more passengers die before reaching their destination. But with clues to the next victim pointing to someone she loves, can Audrey Rose unravel the mystery before the killer’s horrifying finale?

Kerri Maniscalco grew up in a semi-haunted house outside NYC where her fascination with gothic settings began. In her spare time she reads everything she can get her hands on, cooks all kinds of food with her family and friends, and drinks entirely too much tea while discussing life’s finer points with her cats.

Her first novel in this series, Stalking Jack the Ripper, debuted at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list. It incorporates her love of forensic science and unsolved history.

"Truth is a blade. Brutal and ice cold. It cuts. Sometimes when spoken carelessly it even scars." -Escaping from Houdini

Began 1 January 1889 on a week-long voyage across the Atlantic on the RMS Etruria cruise ship to America.

Told from Audrey Rose POV. I think I would have liked it if we could've seen some chapters from Thomas' POV and his analytical mind. While aboard a cruise ship on a voyage to New York, Moonlight Carnival featuring the legendary Houdini provides nightly entertainment often times followed up with grisly murders. Ringleader, Mephistopheles, has eyes for Audrey Rose wanting to add her scientific knowledge to give the show more authentication teaching her slight of hand in the process.

Slight of hand mixed with truth and murder keeps everything fast paced and dazzling.

What did I like about the book?

I love, love, LOVE Audrey Rose and Thomas' chemistry. Their snarky comments, witty replies, flirty retorts and intelligent observations. *heart eyes* Like the other books in this series, Escaping from Houdini is filled with plenty of murder mystery. Audrey Rose is still a girly girl and I love the historical clothing descriptions. Why can't we still dress like that?!

I super enjoy the Mephistopheles character. He's like a beautifully sarcastic intelligent Cresswell with an added dose of masked mystery with a different world view who is unapologetically over the top while caring for the underdog. He understands human nature and encourages Audrey Rose to dream. Plus Mr. Mephisto has some GREAT lines. I'm obviously #TeamCressWorth but I could see myself switching with little encouragement.

“I inquire once more, which will you lose before the week is through? Your heart? Your head? Perhaps, you will lose your life, your very soul to this magical traveling show.” - Escaping from Houdini

What did I not like about the book?

  • I feel like the title is VERY misleading. I honestly thought Houdini would play a much bigger role in the book instead Mephistopheles stole the show.
  • Character Growth: Audrey Rose is still developing her forensic science side and her musings get increasingly dark while Thomas gets jealous and vulnerable and I'm not sure I like either.
