Synopsis:

While Arsinoe, Mirabella, and Katharine all have their own scores to settle, they aren’t the only queens stirring things up on Fennbirn Island.

Queen Katharine has waited her entire life to wear the crown. But now that she finally has it, the murmurs of dissent grow louder by the day. There’s also the alarming issue of whether or not her sisters are actually dead—or if they’re waiting in the wings to usurp the throne.

Mirabella and Arsinoe are alive, but in hiding on the mainland and dealing with a nightmare of their own: being visited repeatedly by a specter they think might be the fabled Blue Queen. Though she says nothing, her rotting, bony finger pointing out to sea is clear enough: return to Fennbirn.

Jules, too, is in a strange place—in disguise. And her only confidants, a war-gifted girl named Emilia and her oracle friend Mathilde, are urging her to take on a role she can’t imagine filling: a legion-cursed queen who will lead a rebel army to Katharine’s doorstep.

This is an uprising that the mysterious Blue Queen may have more to do with than anyone could have guessed—or expected.

Main Characters

  1. naturalist Queen Arsinoe- really a poisoner
  2. elemental Queen Mirabella- strongest elemental in history since the Blue Queen
  3. poisoner Queen Katharine- inhabited with dead queens with their special gifts
  4. Legion Queen- Jules who is 'legion cursed' because she has two gifts; war and naturalist
  5. Blue Queen- elemental that created the Mist that protects the island
  6. Lost Queen- elemental Daphne

Plot

Mirabella and Arsinoe escaped to the mainland without any possessions and are staying with Billy by the graciousness of his mother who not so subtlety let them know they aren't really a welcomed addition. Mirabella is used to wearing dresses and being diplomatic so she fares better in the Mainland but even her sweet protective personality has its limits. Wild Arsinoe is a queen without a kingdom and doesn't care what anyone says or thinks except when other girls flirt with her man. She sticks out like a sore thumb and refuses to conform. After visiting grave Arsinoe is haunted with visions of the past from a lost queen urging them back to Fennbirn.

Meanwhile on the island Katharine wants to be loved and have a peaceful reign but its hard to settle into role when she still doesn't know if her sisters are dead or alive. Her relationship with Pietyr is out in the open and she must choose a council which includes picks from the high priestess which of course causes tension for everyone.  Katharine's reign is further full of turmoil when the protective island mist starts turning against the people leaving death in its wake.

The islanders are not convinced Katharine is the right queen and are ready for a change so a prophesy from Jules' birth is the perfect opportunity to overthrow the triplet bloodline.

What did I like about the book?

I read this book in a day and a half. Couldn't put it down. LOVED IT. The novellas in this series greatly enhance the stories and makes it easier to bear waiting a whole year until the next book. Included in Two Dark Reigns is the back story of the Blue Queen and we learn how the island Mist was created.

Nothing is ever easy for my favorite triplets but thats life and consequences. The building rebellion also gives a glimpse of more of the islanders and their gifts.

What did I not like about the book?

Such an intense story! I have my guess on the conclusion, and it doesn’t have a happily ever after. I guess we’ll see next year. UGH I HATE WAITING SO LONG BETWEEN BOOKS!
