Synopsis:

“Mother knows best” takes on a sinister new meaning in this unsettling thriller perfect for fans of Neil Gaiman, Grimms’ Fairy Tales, and Aimee Molloy's The Perfect Mother.

Everyone says Lauren Tranter is exhausted, that she needs rest. And they’re right; with newborn twins, Morgan and Riley, she’s never been more tired in her life. But she knows what she saw: that night, in her hospital room, a woman tried to take her babies and replace them with her own…creatures. Yet when the police arrived, they saw no one. Everyone, from her doctor to her husband, thinks she’s imagining things.

A month passes. And one bright summer morning, the babies disappear from Lauren’s side in a park. But when they’re found, something is different about them. The infants look like Morgan and Riley—to everyone else. But to Lauren, something is off. As everyone around her celebrates their return, Lauren begins to scream, These are not my babies.

Determined to bring her true infant sons home, Lauren will risk the unthinkable. But if she’s wrong about what she saw…she’ll be making the biggest mistake of her life.

Compulsive, creepy, and inspired by some of our darkest fairy tales, Little Darlings will have you checking—and rechecking—your own little ones. Just to be sure. Just to be safe.

Plot

Twins are born after 36 hours of not sleeping and Lauren is exhausted. After giving birth Patrick is sent away from visiting leaving Lauren struggling with being a new mother of twin boys. To make matters worse a smelly woman tries to make a trade, they both have twins, one pair charmed and one pair cursed. Lauren of course declines and the woman threatens to take them both. Lauren picked up her little darlings and hides in the bathroom while calling the police. Problem: no one noticed an intruder there, everyone thinks Lauren is overly tired.

Lauren has literally no support at home or from the hospital staff. Since the perpetrator was never caught Lauren sees threats in every shadow. For a month she hides away in her house refusing to leave her boys for even a moment. Every moment is spent worrying about their well being. Sleep when they sleep, great advice but between the twins normally one is awake. Four weeks old, the twins go on their first play date and disappear after Lauren momentarily falls asleep. When a detective recovers the newborns Lauren realizes the boys aren't hers.

child abduction, mental health issues, post-partum depression

What did I like about the book?

The lingo! The book is definitely written in English but the dialect is different than American (obviously since the setting is in UK) and I just love it. When books write out words or pronunciations in a way to suggest a particular area and I can hear it in my mind- it just fills my heart. I read a few Southern Contemporaries last year with a similar effect.

Most chapters start with a short quote about changelings from various cultures. I love fairy tales so these little blurbs turn the story dark and sinister.

I think the author did a great job describing the challenges of being a first time mother. Everyone has their own opinions but no one is helping, sleep deprivation, learning to love a very demanding infant, being solely responsible for the welfare of another person, not having enough time for self-care, post partum depression, insecurities.

Lauren seemed like an unreliable narrator. NO ONE believes her and the symptoms could be explained organically (depression, sleep deprivation, mental illness, ect). Even so, a sick part of me wanted to believe something was going bump in the night, evil was lurking around the corner, waiting for the perfect moment.

What did I not like about the book?

The pacing was slow. Within the first 60-80 pages the only thing of significance that happened was Lauren had the twins. I legit was almost halfway done (around page 130) with the book before the plot from the description (children abducted). I wish it would've been more dark.

There was a F/F side romance that was completely unnecessary and irrelevant to the plot. Why couldn't they have just been mutually respecting co-workers? You see that kind of dynamic in all the crime shows.

SPOILER: I was morbidly anticipating an alternated ending.

Date Started/Finished : February 23rd - 25th 2019

Recommend? maybe

if you don't mind slow pacing and you like dark fairy tales- this is a creepily good read.
Rating: 3.5/*****

Excerpt

While death was no stranger to her, a courteous knock on the door to give warning this time would have been appreciated.
Willow Anderson had been blindsided. Hadn’t seen it coming. Everyone faced death sooner or later. Reading obituaries and looking at tombstones were a part of her job, after all. Her life. So why had it come as such a surprise? Either way— warning or no warning— she had to face what had been left behind. There was no point in putting things off.
