Synopsis:

In a similar vein to  The Traveler’s Gift  by Andy Andrews or  Dinner with a Perfect Stranger  by David Gregory,  The Baggage Handler  is a contemporary story that explores one question: What baggage are you carrying?

“The Baggage Handler by David Rawlings is an extraordinary novel that lingered in my heart long after I finished it.”—Colleen Coble, USA Today bestselling author of The House at Saltwater Point and the Lavender Tide series

When three people take the wrong suitcase from baggage claim, their lives change forever.

A hothead businessman coming to the city for a showdown meeting to save his job.

A mother of three hoping to survive the days at her sister's house before her niece’s wedding.

And a young artist pursuing his father’s dream so he can keep his own alive.

When David, Gillian, and Michael each take the wrong suitcase from baggage claim, the airline directs them to retrieve their bags at a mysterious facility in a deserted part of the city. There they meet the enigmatic Baggage Handler, who shows them there is more in their baggage than what they have packed, and carrying it with them is slowing them down in ways they can’t imagine. And they must deal with it before they can leave.

In this modern-day parable about the burdens that weigh us down, David Rawlings issues an inspiring invitation to lighten the load.

Main Characters

  1. Gillian Short- traveling to Niece's wedding, mother of 3 boys, compares herself to others
  2. David Byrne- traveling to business meeting with board members to keep his branch open, wife cheated on him, suffers from physical manifestation of unforgiveness
  3. Michael Downer-traveling to Clarendon University for an athletic scholarship, wants to be an artist

Plot

Three riders with identical black bags go to the baggage claim carousel after their flight to find their luggage and end up leaving with someone else's. On a normal day no one has time to postpone their plans  after a flight and they three main characters are no exception. Each person is invited to Baggage Services where the Baggage Handler offers to grab the correct bag on the signed condition they promise to deal with their individual baggage before leaving the facility.
"What weighs us down is not our baggage but the decision to keep carrying it."

Types of baggage

"People usually collect their baggage, but they'd be better off if they dealt with it."
  1. Social media - "Gillian pulled out her phone. The siren song of Facebook, a song she could never deny." People show fake or glamorized/best versions of themselves online. That doesn't capture realities of life, even when people post daily. For all the pros of being online, it is still a time consuming vortex.
  2. Comparison- "You live in a world today where you're told every part of your life isn't good enough. You've fallen for that. Its not a truth." Gillian found herself constantly comparing her weaknesses to others strengths and had a very low self image. You are good, you are loved, you are enough.
  3. Self-Sabotage- "The message today is that if you're self-sabotaging your future, its not because you want to, but because that future may not be yours."
  4. Unforgiveness- "We've found that people who don't forgive end up not only punishing themselves mentally and emotionally but also physically." Being right, or at least not being wrong is a really big wall easily put up to avoid forgiving someone. "Drowning in bitterness, you've drunk poison in the hope that the person who wronged you will die." Holding on to anger and not trusting often times doesn't hurt the other person, you are the one trapped and in pain.
"Dealing with baggage is hard. It requires effort or swallowing pride. Because some people are so used to carrying their baggage they don't think they can exist without it. Because some people say they need time to deal with it, but that time never arrives. But overall, for most people, its because carrying baggage is just easier, despite the weight."

  • God- "If you need help with your baggage, just let me know." The baggage handler in this parable was clearly God in this story. He is here for us and wants to take our baggage, even when we think we can handle everything on our own.
  • Hope- Whatever negativity you are carrying around with you can be overcome. God wants to take it from you, you just have to be willing to give it up! "Remember: the future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams." Don't be discouraged when obstacles get in the way, maybe its an opportunity to try something else.
  • Fulfillment- "What you do every day... does it fulfill you? The man gave a pathetic shrug. "Not in the slightest. I despise it." … "Then why do you do it?" Make sure what you are spending your time and energy on is something you enjoy and not something others put on you. Its real easy to want to live up to other's expectations.
The main characters were each told to take a look in the mirror, an honest assessment of their current situation compared to what they actually want in life. What is holding you back? Are you carrying around baggage that is weighing you down?

Welcome to the Blog Tour for Glory Road by Lauren K. Denton with JustRead Publicity Tours! We continue the Glory Road celebration on social media starting March 26.

ABOUT THE BOOK

GloryRoad-LaurenKDentonTitle: Glory Road
Author: Lauren K. Denton
Publisher: Thomas Nelson
Genre: Women's Fiction/Southern Fiction
Release Date: March 19, 2019

Written in Lauren Denton's signature Southern style, Glory Road tells the story of three generations of women navigating the uncertain pathways of their hearts during a summer that promises to bring change--whether they're ready for it or not.

At thirty-eight, garden shop owner Jessie McBride thinks her chances for romance are years behind her and, after her failed marriage, she's fine with that. She lives contentedly with her fiery mother and her quiet, headstrong daughter. But the unexpected arrival of two men on Glory Road make her question if she's really happy with the status quo. Handsome, wealthy Sumner Tate asks her to arrange flowers for his daughter's wedding, and Jessie finds herself drawn to his continued attention. And Ben Bradley, her lingering what-could-have-been from high school days who's known her better than anyone and whom she hasn't seen in years, moves back to the red dirt road. Jessie finds her heart being pulled in directions she never expected.

Meanwhile, Jessie's fourteen-year-old daughter, Evan, is approaching the start of high school and trying to navigate a new world of identity and emotions--particularly as they relate to the cute new guy who's moved in just down the road. At the same time, Jessie's mother, Gus, increasingly finds herself forgetful and faces a potentially frightening future. As all three women navigate the uncertain paths of their hearts and futures, one summer promises to bring change--whether they're ready for it or not.

Synopsis:

City dweller John McCall never expected to be out in the High Sierras of 1868 on a wild-goose chase to find the Chiltons' supposedly lost grandson. But now that he's out here, things have gotten even more complicated, mostly due to wildcat Penny Scott. She's not like any woman he's ever met--comfortable in the woods, with a horse, and with a gun.

When Penny and John are taken against their will by a shadowy figure looking for evidence they don't have, both realize they've stumbled into something dangerous and complicated. With their friends and family desperately searching for them, Penny and John must make a daring escape.

When they emerge back into the real world, they are confronted with a kidnapper who just won't stop. They must bring a powerful, ruthless man to justice, even as this city man and country woman fight a very inconvenient attraction to each other.
