I won a copy of this novel from an Instagram giveaway by @storied.adventures hosted by TLC book tours . I do not have to leave a review. All opinions are my own.

When Lizzie Lavenza enrolled at Ingold as its first female medical student, she knew she wouldn't have an easy time. From class demands to being an outsider among her male cohorts, she'll have to go above and beyond to prove herself. So when she stumbles across what appears to be a faulty Bio-mechanical--one of the mechanized cadavers created to service the school--she jumps at the chance to fix it and get ahead in the program.

Only this Bio-mechanical isn't like the others. Where they are usually empty-minded and perfectly obedient, this one seems to have thoughts, feelings... and self-awareness.

Soon Lizzie realizes that it is Victor Frankenstein--a former student who died under mysterious circumstances. Victor, it seems, still has a spark of human intelligence inside him, along with memories of things he discovered before his untimely death.. .and a suspicion that he was murdered to keep that information from getting out. Suddenly Lizzie finds herself intertwined in dark secrets and sabotage that put her life, and the lives of Victor and their friends, in danger. But Lizzie's determined to succeed--even if that means fighting an enemy who threatens the entire British Empire.

Main Characters

  • Elizabeth 'Lizzie' Lavenza- first female medical student. Everyone expected her to be a nursing student, not studying to be a doctor. Trying to follow in her father's footsteps, Lizzie has a lot to prove.
  • Victor Frankenstein- deceased star pupil turned re-animated as a Bio-Mechanical

Politically in the medical science department at Ingold, they are trying to come up with a way to prolong the Queen of England's life. Brilliant student Victor died and was reanimated as a Bio-Mechanical. All reanimated corpses have low intelligence and are unable to do more than follow simple commands. Lizzie, the first female medical student studying to be a doctor, wants to expand her on her experiments and make a name for herself. Lizzie uses one of her inventions to stimulate Victor's brain which raises his awareness and reactivates his intelligence.

alternate history Victorian England at medical school: Ingold
because of the historical time period Lizzie is all about women's rights and feminism.

What did I like about the book?

I liked the idea of being a successful and intelligent woman being in a predominately male field of study. Also, progress in medical studies to help extend life, add to the quality of health and life, or help soldiers is great, adding the queen to the mix should've been amazing.

What did I not like about the book?

I read The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein (see that review HERE) in November and like the darker parts of that Frankenstein book more. Also, Dark Descent is a stand-alone and if you know anything about me - you know that is my favorite length.

The weird science love scenario was random and forced. Lizzie purposely stays away from Victor and then all of a sudden they can't keep their hands off each other? It was just awkward.

Date Started/Finished : April 6th - 8th 2019

Recommend? sure

If you like retellings or Frankenstein its a decent read. There is a friends to lovers romance, science fiction: reanimation.
