from Prologue

The way to heal a broken heart was often with a new romance. And not only would Antonia be assisting her new friend, she might be making her most difficult client happy regardless of his stated wishes. Hale Adams said he wanted a serious-minded woman, someone to share his passion for reading and who enjoyed staying at home rather than needing to be entertained every night of the week. In other words, a mirror image of himself.

Based on his rejection of all nine previous candidates, Mr. Adams recognized his need for someone to balance him on an instinctual level.
However, before Antonia took the audacious step of putting her plan into motion—pretending to be Yancey Palmer in a letter to gauge whether Mr. Adams would be interested in her—a few questions needed answering. “Tell me why you’ve been in love with Hale Adams all these years. There has to be more than him rescuing you from a bully ten years ago.”
A soft glow filled Yancey’s face. “He’s a man of his word. If Hale Adams says he’s going to do something, he does it and does it well. He’s the most upstanding, moral man you could ever hope to meet. He writes a list of things he needs to accomplish during the day and always gets them done. His office is a mess, but he knows the contents of every pile. He’s not as handsome or as impressively built as men like Isaak and Jakob Gunderson, but Hale commands respect simply by walking into a room. Everyone in Helena listens when Hale Adams speaks. You don’t need to see his diploma from Harvard School of Law to know the man is brilliant. He’s simply… perfect.”
Antonia gripped her fingers together, excitement building. “Then what are his flaws?”
“If it were up to him, he’d stay inside his messy law office with its upstairs apartment all the time.” The reply came without hesitation or repudiation. It was a simple statement of fact. “He’s a faithful church member, but outside of Sundays, he has very few social engagements on his calendar.”
“While you enjoy an active social life?” Antonia guessed.
Yancey smiled her answer. “And, I dare say, am often the life of the party. I would have been good for him, but that’s water under the bridge now. No, more like cinders of the bridge I burned. It would be useless to try to reach him now, even if I wanted to. Which I don’t. Not anymore.” The regret lacing each word made it clear that Yancey still cared about Mr. Adams.
Antonia rubbed her bottom lip. In the past, when she’d felt this tingle of excitement racing along her spine, it meant she’d found a perfect match for one of her clients. Hale Adams and Yancey Palmer would never agree to a correspondence courtship with each other, but Antonia wasn’t going to let a little thing like that stop her. She could set up a post office box independent of the agency, provide it to both Yancey and Hale as the mailing address of whatever pseudonyms Antonia chose for them, and then recopy their incoming letters to omit any information that was too specific before mailing them to the recipient.
It just might work.
The tingle of excitement grew.
Shakespeare said a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. His beautiful words were, of course, describing two people who couldn’t love each other based on their names alone. But the same reasoning applied for two people who could love each other if they didn’t know the other’s name.
If it was good enough for the brilliant William Shakespeare, it was good enough for Antonia Archer.

Capturing the Devil REVIEW

Capturing The Devil

Title: Capturing the Devil
Series: Stalking Jack the Ripper
Author: Kerri Maniscalco
Publisher: Jimmy Patterson
Release Date: September 10th 2019
Print Length: 453 pages
Genre: Historical Fiction, Young Adult mystery

Edition:  audiobook

BOOK LINKS: Goodreads | Amazon |

Reason for Reading – I read the first 3 book in this series with my daugther. I borrowed a copy of this novel from the library via Overdrive app. All opinions are my own, any review is voluntary.

In the shocking finale to the bestselling series that began with Stalking Jack the Ripper, Audrey Rose and Thomas are on the hunt for the depraved, elusive killer known as the White City Devil. A deadly game of cat-and-mouse has them fighting to stay one step ahead of the brilliant serial killer---or see their fateful romance cut short by unspeakable tragedy.

Audrey Rose Wadsworth and Thomas Cresswell have landed in America, a bold, brash land unlike the genteel streets of London they knew. But like London, the city of Chicago hides its dark secrets well. When the two attend the spectacular World's Fair, they find the once-in-a-lifetime event tainted with reports of missing people and unsolved murders.

Determined to help, Audrey Rose and Thomas begin their investigations, only to find themselves facing a serial killer unlike any they've heard of before. Identifying him is one thing, but capturing him---and getting dangerously lost in the infamous Murder Hotel he constructed as a terrifying torture device---is another.

Will Audrey Rose and Thomas see their last mystery to the end---together and in love---or will their fortunes finally run out when their most depraved adversary makes one final, devastating kill?

Awesomeness Factor: 3 / ★★★★★

Main Characters

  • Audrey Rose- injured after Escaping Houdini walks with a cane
  • Thomas Cresswell- fights for independence from his father

Characters: 3 / ★★★★★

Normally I absolutely adore Wadsworth/Cresswell but I just wasn't a fan in this book. I do like them turning into a Sherlock Holmes duo though.

Audrey Rose and Thomas are getting married! Over half of the pages are filled with the pair either wanting to touch each other, thinking about sex, or feeling each other up. That is seriously HALF  the plot.

The other part is a copy-cat serial killer taunting the group which forces Audrey to re-examine everything she knew when she was stalking Jack the Ripper. The serial killer moved on to Chicago praying on women that were visiting, unchaperoned, or otherwise vulnerable. True to her nature, Audrey has to stick up for women but lands in the cross hairs for her effort.

Plot and Themes: 3 / ★★★★★

The plot would have been better if it stuck to the mystery/forensic science the other books are known for.

Victorian era America in New York and Chicago. Things are a little different in the US then they were in London. Its more progressive. Women don't need companions and can find work outside the homes. The World Fair was going on in Chicago and people were experiencing the amazing display of electricity.

Setting: 5 / ★★★★★

In this book Audrey is having nightmares and an elusive devil is haunting her dreams. The title is a great blurb about Audrey's internal struggle as well as finding an actual horrific villain: the White City Devil.

What did I like about the book?

I've been drawn to Audrey's dark side from the beginning. In this final book Audrey has to confront her motivation behind her love for forensic science. Deep down, is she a monster like the killers in the cases she works?

I love Thomas Cresswell. Its a well known fact in my house that he is my book boyfriend. His speech that he gives Audrey Rose is beautiful and I'm extremely sad I didn't have an equally amazing moment while my husband said his vows to the judge.

Beyond life, beyond death, my love for thee is eternal.

The author did a great job wrapping up things from the previous novels and bringing everything together. Adventures from Jack the Ripper, Dracula, and Houdini were referenced in a great way.

What did I not like about the book?

I just wanted to mention I thought Audrey Rose + Thomas = OTP (one true pairing) for YEARS. I loved their innocent slow burn love so much. This book was the OPPOSITE of innocent. Ugh. It was ALL lust and sex! I rolled my eyes and cringed so many times. Why did it have to change? Why couldn't they not explore each other's bodies until AFTER marriage? Just NO, I'm so disappointed.

Thomas didn't really play much of a role in this book besides rich/titled boyfriend. His normal brilliance felt dimmed and over-shadowed by mushy crap. Does giving Audrey choices really mean he can't be a man or have a back bone?

Speaking of rich/titled- must be nice when EVERYONE in your life is so influential you can get away with whatever you want. Thomas' dad is a duke, rubs elbows with the Queen. Also, he's a descendent of Dracula which is cool. His family has tons of money and houses and he can spend his life in leisure. Audrey's grandmother is some kind of royalty also who apparently trumps Thomas' dad. It was a pissing contest on which side is better off. Why couldn't they just be normal people and solve the mystery with their brains like before?

Date Started/Finished : October 14th-16th 2019

Writing: 4/★★★★★
Story – 2 / ★★★★★- I thought this was a mystery but its really a smut book
Romance – 3 / ★★★★★ - its so back and forth and really just teenage lust
Angst – 2 / ★★★★★- Thomas was over Audrey cheating with minimal effort and Audrey didn't seem to really care Thomas had another fiancé because- sex.
Content Flow – 5 / ★★★★★- I loved the details all coming together from the other books

Recommend? no

Recommend To – if you are the kind of person that wants to finish what you start- go ahead
Would you encourage others to read this book? NO. I like the mystery of not knowing after Escaping Houdini much better than knowing after Capturing the Devil
Would Read More from Author? Definitely

Overall Rating: 3.5/★★★★★

based off Goodreads' ratings: 2 stars – it was OK. Not really impressed. I probably finished reading the book (wishing I hadn't). I was hoping for more or wanting something different.
