Eighteen-year-old Jordan Conway has always wanted to help people, but helping seven archangels to achieve their divine duty was never quite what he had in mind...

When Jordan is entrusted by the head nun of his orphanage to deliver a mysterious backpack to a New York City address, he comes unexpectedly face-to-face with Archangel Gabriel. Their acquaintance fast uncovers a labyrinth of secrets that connect Jordan's once-normal life to an ancient heavenly prophecy. Now, he must help Gabriel to reunite the archangels before evil forces grow too strong.

Soon, Jordan and Gabriel find themselves on a divine quest across the globe, while deep in the pits of Hell, Satan plots his return to earth. To gain control, however, Satan needs the powerful prophetic objects locked safe inside Jordan's backpack-and the devil will stop at nothing to get what he wants.

With that notion threatening his only family and the safety of his newfound friends, Jordan must do whatever it takes to protect the ones he loves and help the archangels succeed. If that means sacrificing all he thought he knew to go to war with the devil himself? Bring it on.

Jordan is 18 and graduating high school. That means he is aging out of the orphanage with the intent of taking a gap year from college to go on a mission trip. Before that can happen the orphanage was attacked and Jordan was given a task to deliver a backpack to an address and whoever was there would help him next. The Genesis of Seven follows Jordan on his quest as he teams up with seven angels and learns an alternate history of when happened when Satan was cast out of Heaven.

What did I like about the book?

The package I received from the author was awesome. I had so much fun reading the letter and unpacking the included gifts. It just set the tone for excitement. Being a fan of books, I appreciate them in all shapes and sizes. This one came signed by the author with a BEAUTIFUL naked cover. The quote at the start of the book is the same included on the bookmark:
In the beginning he was one of us, a brother amongst us in our Empyrean Domain.
The Genesis of Seven tells the story of select archangels sent to Earth after the fall of Satan with a special task after a prophecy in Heaven revealed an ultimate battle. Like Jordan, the readers go in knowing nothing and slowly learn the angels' (on earth and fallen) origin story. My favorite parts was the different levels or both Heaven and Hell. Angels have varying jobs and skills. No one fully knows the will of God, even angels have to have faith.

Jordan travelled all over the world enlisting the seven archangels on Earth and they turned into surrogate guardians. All of the angels were concerned about Jordan's health, making sure he ate and slept, knew what he was getting into, and starting training because they plan on keeping Jordan around on this task.

I've read other YA books about Angels including a love story. Fallen by Lauren Kate even includes an origin story. TGoS doesn't have a love story! (There is the start of a crush on the girl next door. The angels tried to meddle in Jordan's love life. It was so awkward and cute! That was a brief set up and seemed natural at the moment) Its all action and adventure. The stakes are high and the angels have quirks. I appreciate that so much.

What did I not like about the book?

As much as I loved the angels acting as a big brother to Jordan a lot of those parts of the book made the story drag. I understand that Jordan sleeping helped track passing of time but it felt repetitive and took away from the urgency. It also didn't make since that angels don't have to eat or sleep but they wait around on Jordan to do these things so he's forced to feel all of the traveling. I know when I travel with kids I try to do it while they are sleeping so I don't have to stop all the time for bathroom breaks or listen to 'are we there yet?' on repeat. There was a time when one Angel went off on his own and that turned out fine... why didn't they do that when gathering up the angels when Jordan was injured? Sanctify a place where Jordan would be protected while the other guys finished gathering the group. I get Jordan was the main POV but Jordan was not a convincing factor, more a liability. The contents of the backpack brought the angels together when they'd rather continue a mundane existence among humans. That would've sped up the Present Day story more and given more time for origin storytelling.
