The hard truth about this idea is that masks are just what their name implies . . . coverups. And when we live this way, we risk obscuring our true reflection. Not only that, but we will never feel quite right hiding behind an identity that doesn’t belong to us.

This is what I look with the 'cute cry' filter. Bigger, greener, eyes with long dramatic lashes. Darker, plumper, lips with a cupid's bow dip. That's not what I look like IRL. That's the point.

Theme

"Couldn't Put It Down"-ness- 3/★★★★★ This is meant to be a year long devotional. I had to skim through it in a few3 days.

What did I like about the book?

Social media is a part of my teenagers' every day lives. Chapter 1 started off with 'living unfiltered' and a challenge to post an unfiltered selfie to start a discussion. "I don't need to live behind a filter because..." #loveyourselfiechallenge Its hard living in a fear of being judged and like you don't measure up to others. I think kids need to talk about it. I liked the discussion prompt.

I love the pretty covers this author has for her devotionals. Coffee Shop Devos is a pale purple and this one is a dark glittery pink. Definitely targeting girls. The weekly devotions are set up with a scripture, short story, journaling area with questions, confession, prayer, and challenge. My daughter likes how it is interactive and doesn't take a lot of time to complete. She can read it with me, journal on her own, and have prompts to engage her friends all while growing in maturity and her walk with God.

Just like there different seasons in a year, this devotional is separated by four parts:
1. Why did God create me this way?
2. Where do I find my identity?
3. How can I embrace my uniqueness?
4. How can I discover my potential and pursue my calling?

My daughter has found the discussions relevant to her. Admitting she has tried to hide behind social media, making everything look picture perfect instead of revealing struggles. Hiding behind positivity, like everything is great. Some of the conversations we've had made me sad. My daughter's confessions of insecurities that I absolutely love about her as a person. I'm hoping she can continue to see God's truth in her instead of living behind masks.

What did I not like about the book?

I'm just being petty here so I have something to write down: the book smells! Its not the bookstore scent, or like copy paper. You know what I mean, that happy book scent. Instead its like formaldehyde or a death chemical that fills my nostrils every time I open it.
